The Gulf Coast Division of the USFA

The United States Fencing Association (USFA) is the national governing body for the sport of competitive fencing in the United States. It is broken down, in turn, into administrative divisions.

The official website for our division is here: GULF COAST DIVISION.

GULF COAST DIVISION BOUNDARIES

The Gulf Coast Division Bylaws define the division's boundaries as:

Beginning at the mouth of the Sabine River, at the Texas-Louisiana border.

Extending west down the Texas Gulf Coast to the Mexican Border.

Thence west following the Mexican-Texas border to the junction of US Highway 77.

Thence northward following US Highway 77 to the point where it is intersected by the 31st parallel of latitude.

Thence east following the 31st parallel to the Texas-Louisiana border.

Thence southward following the Texas-Louisiana Border to the mouth of the Sabine River.

A map of the Gulf Coast Division including its boundaries and locating the clubs within it can be found on the CLUBS page of this site... See the menu at the top of this page. A map showing the boundaries of the Gulf Coast division relative to the other divisions in Texas and the Southwest Section may bee found below.

Collectively, a number of divisions are also grouped together as a section. The Gulf Coast Division is a member of the Southwest Section. The other divisions in the SW Section are South Texas, North Texas, Border Texas, Oklahoma, Ark-La-Miss and Louisiana. The sections are not administrative arms of the USFA and do not "outrank" a division. They exist purely to hold an annual "Sectional Qualifying Competition" for those who wish to compete in Junior or Division 1-A events at the following summer National Fencing Championships.

A few, like our own SW Section, also sponsor a circuit of tournaments. The Southwest Section Circuit Cup (SSCC) is comprised of one tournament per division per year. A division may opt not to participate in the SSCC, such as the Border Texas Division. Conversely, there may be issues between SSCC guidelines and how a given division wishes to organize an event that call for the SSCC to rescind an offer, as with the differences between the SSCC and the Louisiana Division.

The Gulf Coast Division (see the maps, below) includes such cities as Houston, Galveston, Beaumont, Port Arthus, Orange, Conroe, Huntsville, Madisonville, Bryan, College Station, Cleveland, Livingston, Sealy, Bellville, Brenham, Prairie View, Hempstead, Navasota, Columbus, Lake Jackson, Angleton, Bay City, Victoria, Port Lavaca, Corpus Christi, Padre Island and Harlingen.

Needless to say, not all of these communities have their own fencing clubs, but they form any, they would fall under the Gulf Coast umbrella.
